Leadership Takes Work!
I recently had the privilege of sitting through the Chic-Fil-A 2012 Leader cast which, if you’re not familiar with it, is a group of successful leaders from all over that get together for one full day and deliver inspiring stories and speeches to help other leaders grow. One of the leaders - John Maxwell- spoke on being intentional about your growth as a leader. In other words, growing in
leadership doesn’t just happen! You need to have a plan! You need to work disciplines into your life and then work them as you would your muscles at a gym! The more time and energy you put into it, the stronger and more efficient it becomes!
I was reading Proverbs today and I came across this: Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave. Proverbs 12:24. So this isn’t a new Idea, but it’s imperative to developing as a leader. Over the last five or six years, I’ve acquired a pretty impressive collection of leadership books (please don’t ask me how many I’ve actually read!). Reading has never really been a very strong discipline in my life, but I know I need to start working at changing this. I don’t think a leader can reach their full potential if they aren’t gleaning off of other successful leaders and their experiences. As Pastor Dave would say, “Leaders are learners” or “Leaders are readers!” So I’m going to start my days off by first getting into God’s word, but then opening up a book on leadership and spending at least 10 minutes working that discipline into my life.
